Timber buildings

Slightly off topic---- Our little Market Town is in need of a new community hall. A timber construction is being looked into, any suggestions for a company well versed in Timber constructions?

Our TC is really really struggling with this!!!!!!

Have they considered straw bale? Much of it could be self built by a community group, with professional support. You'd get fantastic insulation, a lovely building with character that feels good, and it could well save money.

Or a real character timber building by someone like Ben Law.

Those are all the big firms that do sawn oak framing. If you want the real tradition of hewn oak framing then there's nobody better in the land than Rob Ley (though his son and daughter are coming on well). I was talking to him only yesterday. Thanks Biff, I will wait and see how things pan out. I left the TC scratching their heads about how to fund this 'new' hall---dear me. we have over 7000 people here and another 2000 shortly to be added, so the 'do we' or 'dont we' of a decent community hall is a no brainer really.

It was some kind of Millenium Fund build. While not as spectacular as the links further up, it is very nice, with a bar, stage, extra rooms (one was used to keep the ankle bighters occupied during the wedding reception).

It seemed well designed, and functional.

"another 2000 shortly" suggests there's a lot of new houses being built. Is there no chance that the developers would contribute to a new hall?

Having said that, if "shortly" means all permissions are already in place then I'd guess getting funding from the developer would be like getting blood from a stone after the event.

Section 106 money, ask the planning department what they are doing with it. All developments are subject to s.106, but it is decided by the district council officers which ones fall into being required to pay out, how much and what the money will be put towards. There is curently no consultation with the residents. Lobbying would of course help sway their decision.

Next option is to lobby the parish council to up their precept. They get a loan, up the precept by £5 a home and repay using that.

I'm currently working on an extension to our community centre to use as a dedicated youth room, where the pc may well raise the precept to pay for staff to run it.

Nothing to do with timber framed buildings but it may help you towards funding. A small village fairly close to me, called Llanfoist, needed a new village hall. Someone must of hit upon the idea of having a Village Open Gardens Day to raise money to build it. It was all set up properly as part of the Yellow Book Scheme and has proved so popular that the village hall is now built but the gardens are still open 1 day a year, in June and I believe the money now raised, funds community projects which in turn benefit the village. They even have mini buses laid on to take visitors to the gardens which are further out and some of the gardens which back on to the Monmouthshire Canal have canal boats rides between the gardens. The village hall is now used for lunches and later for cream tea's on the Open Gardens Day. It seems to be a day when the whole community comes together to help. I know they have a website but because I am technologically challenged, I can't put a link on here they way other forum members would but maybe you could look it up for yourself, Llanfoist Open Gardens. I hope this helps you or any other forum members who are trying to raise funds for a community project.

Lady Arowana, thankyou. I tried to put a quote on here once before and I think I managed it. I failed to put photo's on here after several people (Penners, FamilyWiggs and Joce &Chris I think) explained how to do it in the most basic terms. My friend who is an IT Technician said she would teach me how to do it but has been ill and it didn't really seem right to go and visit with a bunch of grapes etc and then say "Oh by the way can you show me how to use all the different bits on that Period Property website" :lol: . I can just about use the smilies but I will have a go.

Alex, thank you. That is very interesting, and I shall try to weave the ideas mentioned into my thoughts for a presentation that I have to give early next week. The Tourism officer at Central Beds is starting to look at enhancing our Town , this, coupled with the progress that is being made by the Community Hall committee could help.

Jocelyn, you are welcome, I just thought it was something to think about if your Town Council won't come up with the money to fund your new hall.
