I've got some handmade tiles (craven dunhill -jackfield) to be used a splashback behind the sink in the bathroom but not sure what adhesive and grout I should be using. The small amount of tiles I have cost about as much as doing the whole room from Topps tiles so want to make sure they don't fall off. I cant find anything lime based after a quick search so guess I'll have to use some modern materials!

I agree with noj. What's wrong with modern materials? The only time we PPUK folk should eschew them is when they will have a deleterious or seriously anachronistic effect on the building. Even then, some anachronism is inevitable if we are to live a 21st century life.

I had a barney with the local English Heritage Standartenführer who was trying to veto LED lighting in the church. I suggested the insurance would have a view on oil lamps and candles (lots of elfin safety implications). It transpired that Guildford Diocese will allow only LED for new installations, with the full support of EH central.
If it's reversible, doesn't damage the structure, blends in, and does the job...

I must add my agreement to the above comments. Whilst PPUKers are (hopefully) united in our appreciation of the traditional, I'm sure we all have our own personal limits to the level of period authenticity we are willing to endure. I'm quite prepared to hold my hand up and admit that, while I thoroughly enjoy living in a house dating back to around 1550, I would likely be horrified to actually live precisely as the first occupants must have done. So, agonising over the most traditional adhesive for tiling a bathroom seems perilously close to a 'first world problem' to me.
Also, to echo Penners' question about what is wrong with modern materials, we should remember that traditional materials and methods were mostly a limitation that our forebears were forced to endure because they had no other choice. Thus, for example, it may be 'traditional' to buy iron nails from the local blacksmith to nail riven lath to our walls in preparation for plastering, but I rather suspect that's only because there was no option of buying stainless steel nails (or staples) and sawn lath from the local builder's merchant.
I wonder what our cave-dwelling ancestors thought about the 'cowboys' who built the first shelters using all those new-fangled methods and materials? :wink: :lol:

I'm not an expert on tiling, but what I have done, I know there are two types of adhesive for basic tiles: ready mixed and powder. Obviously the ready mixed is easier, but if you have large tiles or are tiling on cement render, you should use the powder stuff.
However, for a lime based plaster, I would assume you can use the pre-mixed stuff, but I would check. Also, check whether you need an acrylic primer.
If your tiles have similar properties to glass tiles (ie. doesn't soak up any moisture at the back), you need a special mosaic adhesive that doesn't need to soak into the back of the tile.
