Threshold between timber and tiled floor

We created a wall opening, one room has timber the other the original tiled floor. At the bottom of the wall opening there is a vertical line of slate at the middle of the threshold. I don't know enough to understand why that is the case but my question is how important is to try and preserve it? Especially since we are planning to level the gap so we can bridge the height difference between the 2 floors.

Thanks for that Erik, I couldn't make out the name and the angle deceived me into thinking it may be a metal plate. Regarding the embedded slates, I suspect they may have been intended as a damp barrier to prevent/inhibit damage to the wooden floor. Do you know the original intended use for tiled floor room?

I've not seen slate used like that. Looks like someone has taken a bit of care and used it to reduce water getting from the solid floor to the wooden floor. They have also used an air gap. I like these people.

It will be nearly impossible to restore the slate but it is a good hint that it's worth putting a bit of thought into protecting the wood from the water under the solid floor. If you are planning to use any wood in the gap it would be well worth sitting them on supports off the concrete with a decent air gap underneath that is ventilated to the under floor space.

I suspect it may have changed over the years. When we bought it was a bathroom.
