Things that go bump in the night...

A self-confessed house hypochondriac, has anyone else noticed with all this cold weather that their houses are making a lot of the ol' "crick", "erk" etc noises in the night? Kinda got used to it in the summer after a hot day and it all cools down, but never noticed it in winter before.

But having had major roof works done in the last 6months, I'm still looking for all the new cracks as things settle down... I guess I've answered my own question, but all reassurance and personal experiences are useful. You might notice what time of day I'm making this post...

Not a single pipe in my house is mounted properly to anything, they are just supported where they run through walls etc. They therefore can move and make all sorts of noises. When the heating comes on, you hear the most number of squeaks etc but they can occur at any time. Took a little getting used to but now we don't really notice them.

In my current house (only moved in last week) which is 300 years old, there are no noises at night but previous house (Victorian) was very noisy after very hot or cold days. There used to be the usual creaks etc but also a very loud banging noise (no jokes please) in the corner of the bedroom which used to wake me up. Never did work out what it was!

The vent in our cast iron fireplace in the bedroom lifts and drops when it is windy and always wakes us up.

I have never got round to opening it at night to stop it.

We have huge booms which vary in location, but at times shake the house and rattle the windows.

We have come to the conclusion these are gas explosions in old underground mineworkings. We are in a valley and we think possibly closer to the old workings that other houses nearby.

We have come to the conclusion these are gas explosions in old underground mineworkings.

But what would cause gas to explode spontaneously? If the mines are abandoned, surely there can't be any ignition source?

Is there a quarry in the vicinity? Do you eat curry often?

There is no quarry and no other explanation. The curry - well it's not the septic tank...
