There's a ghost in my cellar!

The ghostly noises turn out not to be actual ghosts, but strange murmerings comming from a geological fault situated in our cellar. The cellar, which we only discovered fairly recently, is partly just quarried out of the bedrock, and has a geological fault running across it. I have left some of the 4" wide chasm in the floor open, partly as a curiosity, and partly for ventilation. There is an inexplicable chill wind that emanates from the crack which is quite refreshing. Last night, the strange murmerings returned. They sound like distant traffic mixed with the tears of the eternally damned, which you can only hear inside the house, not outside. Last night I could swear the noises were comming from "The Rift".

Actually, I think you're probably safe. If you were hearing the genuine cries of the eternally damned, wouldn't the draught from below be hot? Very hot?

The noises used to wake us up in the middle of the night. My wife went to the doctors in the end and was diagnosed with tinnitus!

I suspect the fault has another end on a nearby valley edge, and that's where the wind gets in (it's windy in the cellar when it's windy outside).

Funnily enough, my poltergeist only first showed up shortly after I moved in with my (now) wife. She's the one who tidies away tools according to their colour/size/imagined use - rather than anything related to their actual function.

Now that sounds familiar. They also put it somewhere where you are guarenteed to find it just after you've finished the job having struggled through without the tool / gone out and bought or borrowed another one / thought "stuff it" and done something else (possibly involving beer).

My wife reckons our house suffers from tall poltergeists, the type who only puts things on high up shelves. Strange, as I've never noticed it and she's almost a foot shorter than me......

In our household, 'the poltergeist who removes the tools every time you put them down' is usually our Labrador!

That sounds great! Now all you have to do is train him to use the Black & Decker, and you'll have more spare time.

Labradors have great cleaning up machine fastened to them - a lab's tail is the most efficient thing *EVER* for clearing a shelf, coffee table top etc

That's absolutely true, but I'm not sure that it entirely satisfies the dictionary definition of "cleaning".

Somehow I feel that the word "demolishing" comes closer to an accurate description.
