Many thanks for highlighting this page, Evelyn. I missed the TV show, and I'm really glad to have a chance of seeing what Gervase hath wrought. Exemplary!

I've just been telephone Mori polled - all manner of things about was I satisfied with the area in which I live (no because it's being spoiled basically! Idiot councils...) why I bought my house (cos it was a historic building in a historic area ...) was I intending 'upgrading' it energy wise eg double glazing (well - one tiny new Biff oak window - apart from that.. no! I have shutters and wobbly glass) and loft insulation, (I mentioned sheep's wool as a possibility) what did I think of renewable energy, would I campaign for it (I said not for wind farms in Redesdale - really set against that - thought the government should be looking at wave power for mass consumption and giving more grants for green energy for individual households eg solar panels and ground source heat pumps etc) how far did I go by car each week to shop - did I ever go by any means other than car? As there is nowhere to shop here and public transport is hit and miss not much choice or starve - I said I bought some sarnies in King's Cross Station last week and got there by train, (a round trip of over 300 miles...) how far did I travel for leisure activities by car - was I considering moving in the next five years and if so what sort of settlement was I going to move to - did I ever consider campaigning on issues which affected the environment... and was I involved in local campaigns.. well, today's bit of campaigning includes another letter in the Hexham Courant , and an e-mail reply to a person from Liverpool Pathfinder body telling her what I thought of her letter to me about the Edge Hill demolitions. I hope those count... interesting though that the historic environment and its protection wasn't automatically considered in the poll as environment campaigning.

Questioned about was I considering using the car less - I said I didn't really use it without a good reason mostly, but without adequate public transport it's dificult to cut back if you don't want to starve and be cut off from the world totally.

She also asked why I thought many people didn't bother to campaign about issues. I said inertia and lack of interest by too many and even those who care there is possibly a feeling that it was usually a David and Goliath battle and you are usually up against megabucks corporations too often hand in hand with those in power and it's hard hard and distressing work.

Not a lot to with the Webb's little pad but I wonder how they chose me to telephone?

Unfortunately so many questions really involved more thinking about than I had time for in an unprepared for phone call, especially the ones about how far did I travel by car for leisure, visits etc so it makes you wonder how much you can actually rely on the results of these polls.

I suspect that when they asked if you intended to "upgrade" your house, they meant with uPVC windows, a really watertight external coat of plastic goo, a nice skim of Thistle over the interior walls... etc.
You know - PROPER upgrading.
