The "shabby chic" look.

I'm in Buxton. On entering a Victorian pub and seeing that all the tiles had been removed from the wall I thought "Oh what a shame."
However, upon closer inspection, it turns out it's wallpaper, printed to look like that. Who knew that was a thing!

Shabby chic seems to be a way to make a virtue of bad workmanship. Frank Gehry advocated something similar in his own house, and that looked a mess to me too. However, I wish that more places that want the knackered look, took the faux distressed route, using wallpaper to look like bricks or broken tiles etc. In a lovely pub near me, they did it for real and removed all the plaster and painted the french polished mahogany battleship grey. I think it it some kind of middle class inverted snobbery.

one of my pet hates is shabby chic, especially when it comes to taking good quality mahogany furniture and literally plastering it with Annie Sloan or similar "chalk paint" - emulsion with some plaster of paris added in order that zero effort is required to prep the wood.

I think it will be the looked back on as the "changing rooms overuse of mdf" of our times.

I once witnessed a fine old antique sideboard that had been "shabby chicced". Sacrilege, it was. A century and more of patina ruined. Mutter!
