In a storm this week, water spouted from a joint in a downcomer from the roof guttering, instead of carrying on downwards, and water cascaded down the wall instead.

On investigation, the blockage has been revealed as - a champagne cork.

I think it is the birds. They make an awful lot of noise on the roof, possibly this is an explanation?

'Fraid it's been there a long time by the look of things, as it's swollen up hugely, and split into three. No markings left.

It had collected, over time, leaves etc around it, which eventually blocked the pipe so it couldn't cope.

If it was one of ours, it would be 2006 Vintage Waitrose I suspect!


Odd though - how on earth did it get there? We do tend to pop corks at the back door, but they shoot out into the garden!

Maybe a friendly and helpful squirrel or Jackdaw - which by the way we seem to have daily in our kitchen as they keep falling down the chimney.
