daub. and its in need of attention. i thought it was lime render but ive just looked above the door frame and its daub. now do i repair it with more daub? or lime render? and how do you protect daub from the elements? surely daub would be the last thing you would render a house with?

phew , looks like it might have daub then the lime/chalk render ontop , is this normal? i thought the lime render went straight onto the laths.

I don't really know what's normal but I'd have thought that laths were necessary to hold the render in place.

Here a bit of exploration I did on our house clearly showing the laths over the daub (if only the render wasn't cement - sigh!)

On the Mike Wye course they demonstrated using a harling coat on top of cob (which I guess is the same as daub) and then lime render on top of that.
