The finished roof!

Loads of help towards this project over the years, I actually can't thank you all enough as without this forum this building could not have progressed like this.

Plastic pigeon was kind enough to ask in the other thread for piccies, will attempt to upload.

This shows the roof before works, it's Swithland skate but lacking sufficient slate so lacking sufficient overlap and so not functioning. We had to get 30% more.

Yes that's worked


This shows the difference between the correct Swithland completed this July, on the left, and on the right side of the gulley you can see the haphazard DIY slating of the 1980s work.

A close up of the new laid Swithland, and the new hips in dark clay as opposed to the inappropriate dark red ones from the 1980s.

See the weeny tiny slates at the top, it's diminished course, a X the roofers took great care to make some dramatic diminishment!

And completion:

So pleased with it, thoroughly recommend DG Platts and co. Great company with a passion for conservation!

At last it's functioning as well as looking good and we're no longer relying on the felt to keep the rain out!!!

And I must give special thanks to Gareth Hughes, our resident historic buildings consultant, who found the roofer, and who has been my trusted adviser on this project for many years now.

Thanks kreyzig! The roses there are David Austin Gentle Hermione - repeat flowering and strongly scented.

Even better ( in my view) are the roses round the crenellated side which are David Austin's Lady Emma Hamilton. The fragrance of those is the most intense apricot. Photo doesn't show it but there's a long run of them, in honour of my cat Lady Emma Hamilton.

we've got a few David Austins dotted around, it sure makes a difference having them in quantity like that.

Thanks for the lovely comments. It's nice to share it with people who get it. My friends have been looking at me as if I'm crazy as we've now spent way more on the cottage than we'll ever get back and still no mains water, so no one would ever buy it. ( no one normal anyway) But we love it.

I'd have thought that would quickly start to smell rather bad. Mind you, it explains your popularity with cats! :wink:

I've come rather late to this thread, Joce, but it's lovely to see that your devotion to doing the very best for your beautiful house remains undiminished. What a wonderful job!
