The Builders Pocket Manual by AC Smeaton (a relative of the architect perhaps?), published in London in 1837.

Its quite interesting!

I expect your wonderful manual has a very strong rival with this beautiful June weather, hence the lack of replies! But I've had a little dip into that, and look forward to a proper read - it's wonderful stuff and very relevant advice for us. Just started on my windows, so interesting to read that section -thanks for posting.

Just bear in mind that:
1. these were the techniques that gave us the buildings which we all now have such a headache looking after, and
2. this is a book, regurgitating what the author heard on site, or told the builders to do. Any resemblance to reality may be greatly exaggerated.
