I have a thatched cottage with the thatch on all 4 sides, whereas most cottages just have it on 2 sides.Does this or the style of thatching have anything to do with the age of the house?

More seriously, I think the answer to your question is No. But tell us more, there is bound to be other evidence than the shape of the roof.

I dont think it would either. Hip roofs are still made today. Hip is the usual form on earth walls.

Yes, the traditional mud and stud cottages in Lincolnshire often had hip roofs. The thatch eave makes an overhang that protects the wall from too much rain so its useful to have it going all the way round. With a brick or stone gable it would not be so important. I guess the shape of the roof has more to do with the building materials of the wall than the age of the cottage.

What I've read is that earth walls dont have the resistance to movement that would be necessary with gable type roofs.

Sounds plausible, NT, I guess mud, thatch and the hip roof design combine with a certain serendipity. Can't think why Barratts don't go for it.
