Thatch Ridge - Sedge or Straw??

Hi there

Again, looking to you for your views!

My thatcher has asked if I would like a sedge ridge or a straw ridge? He says sedge lasts longer but is a different colour to the reed he is using?

What your personal opinions PLEASE?

Do you get straw ridges on reed thatch? I think I've only noticed sedge ridges on a reed thatch, but then most are straw on straw around here.

To be honest, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference, unless of course it was a completely new thatch then you'd be able to see the difference by the colour.

I think a sedge roof would be better, thanks for your help.

Interesting article! Great to read properties are being rightly cared for. That building has a turf ridge, now is that different to sedge?? So many options for the ridge, but I'm definitely going to choose sedge, as that's the majority decision. Many thanks for sharing that with me.

OOo please don't confuse me! :wink: As sedge apparently lasts longer, I'm going for that option. Perhaps, Ill post a photo once it has been completed, as so many have been part of my decision-making process.
