Timed rather nicely with recent calls for the government to do something about the nasty high price of fuel, which seems to have elicited a response along the lines of "we're looking into various options". The last option I heard about was some sort of price reduction for remote rural areas.

I doubt they'll actually do anything about it, but I think it's indicative that government (of all persuasions) still don't really get it or are just too afraid to be honest enough to say that fuels prices are going to increase dramatically and there's no going back.

Meanwhile, that awfully nice Cameron chappie doesn't seem to know what to do:

That's extremely interesting - I've often wondered how "carbon trading" would work.

In Shaun's presentation he says that Government income from the system would be hypothecated for carbon reduction schemes. Now... call me an old cynic, but I wonder. Hypothecation has always seemed anathema to Governments of every hue, because it removes their room for flexibility in the way that the funds are allocated.

I wonder what a TEQ (over and above your free allocation) will cost. And will we be required to surrender TEQs when purchasing renewable fuels, e.g. wood?

Government income is not central to the scheme though could be a feature that a particular government chose to add on, perhaps in lieu of other fuel duties.

No, not on firewood. This is about fossil fuels - oil, coal and gas.

Oh I think what he was talking about there was revenue from the 60% of the allocation that goes out to tender - the weekly auction that firms, government etc bid for. The other 40% is the entitlement for ordinary people; that part doesn't produce a revenue stream.

Welcome to the latest TEQs update.

It's been a hectic few days for everyone connected with the TEQs campaign. For me personally, yesterday started with a cab pulling up at my door at 5am to whisk me off to BBC White City for an interview on the "Wake Up To Money" show. Just what you need ahead of a big day!

The launch of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Peak Oil report into TEQs later that morning was a real pleasure. John Hemming MP, Caroline Lucas MP and Jeremy Leggett all spoke extremely well about TEQs, and the video footage of the event is being edited as I write. The first videos have just gone live on our website, and the rest should follow within 24 hours.

The media coverage of yesterday's launch has so far been exceptional, with coverage from the BBC, Bloomberg News, *Time *magazine, the *Financial Times
* and many others. It is still ongoing too, as I was interviewed by *The
Times* just a couple of hours ago. There have also been some excellent blogs commenting on the launch.
