temporary site bathroom

Hi we are about to undertake a complete refurbishment project so will have static caravan accommodation for a while. Are there any temporary bathrooms/showers/wc units we can put on a site whilst we do the works? We can connect up to a septic tank.

If you are getting a static caravan, get one with kitchen, bathroom, WC built in. These are widely available from caravan sites and static caravan dealers - at least they are down here in Cornwall. If you are this part of the world, let me know and I'll give you some links. £1k will get you something with the doors falling off. £8k gets you something my parents are willing to stay in so can't be too bad. Be warned, most statics are designed for summer use only and have very little insulation so are very cold in the winter...

(It actually went down to -2°C inside the caravan before we gave up and moved into the house)

Bottled gas showers certainly exist as I've used them at festivals but I'm not sure how much you'd be looking at to buy/rent one long term. The self building magazines always have ads for static caravans and may have other options too.
You'll need a site toilet unless you're very isolated and are doing everything yourself. I would imagine you'd want to try and keep as much of the building site outside your home. I reckon I could probably have bought a portaloo for the money I spent on hiring the one I had for as long as I did.

I would also suggest checking into the cost of a renting a real home for the duration - we were fortunate that the house remained 'liveable' during our project but in retrospect it might have been cheaper and saner to store most of our stuff and rent a flat for 6 months. We lost a lot of time moving things around and doing work in stages so there was always power, heat and light. At the very least it would have focused the builders minds and stopped them from nicking most of the boys on other jobs!

There are plenty of sanitation units available designed for use on construction sites - loo & shower in 1 small "portakabin" style unit. I'd do what others suggest though and just have the facilities in your static caravan - unless you're thinking of a loo for lots of builders to use and you don't want them tramping through your caravan.

In which case, I have seen Portaloos that can be plumbed, rather than relying on vacuum tanker emptying. Or can you temporarily plumb a loo in somewhere in the house, with a quick stud wall cubicle round? That would be cheaper than Portaloo hire. Or see if you can get one secondhand (I wouldn't be at all surprised if they are on Ebay!) - you can always cut a hole in the tank unit and connect it to your septic tank.

I agree entirely with MdB. Your term "complete refurbishment" suggests that yours could be a pretty long project, and I really think you don't want to be roughing it for that length of time.

We spent four years in a 30 ft static caravan with two children, two dogs and two guinea pigs. Believe me, at the end of a long day's work in the building, filthy and bitter cold, as you sink into a hot bath you'll bless the day you decided to get a caravan which has a bathroom.

Thanks for the comments. It looks like a well appointed static is the best option with a portaloo for when we have builders on site. I also fancy a compost dunny behind a hedge for when its warm. We are also considering renting a 'proper' house during works so thanks for that tip. Incidently saw a decent static go on e-bay for 0.49p last week! So bargains are to be had,
