Tee Hinges and Ledge Doors - Predicament

Hello!

I'm in a bit of a predicament regarding a ledge door and its hinges.

Basically, the door is in the hall, where we have 2 other internal doors. The existing doors have the boards "best side" facing into the hall. We'd also like our 3rd door to have its best side facing into the hall, so they all match, however, as this door will be opening into the hall, I'd have to put the tee hinges on the "best side" of the door, thus making it look a bit odd compared to the other two.

Besides using butt hinges, is there any other options I should consider?

If you are using exposed " T " hingies your hingies must be fitted on " best side" if you want the door to swing in that direction.
Traditionally ledged doors would swing within a room with best side outside, Hingies ( t, strap etc..) would then be fitted on the internal top and bottom ledge for an inward swinging action.
Also ( traditionally) doors would not open into a hallways from other internal rooms ( simply because this area is a " transit" space for people that could end up with a door slammed into their face). The opposite is applicable only to a front entrance door, this must be opened inwards towards ( usually) a hallway otherwise when there is a knock on the door people that knock could end up in front of a passing bus when the door is opened. :wink:
There are always exception to the rule as to which direction doors should open for practicality reasons. ( as you have found out)
This is where the saying " you can't have your cake and eat it" comes into play.
You can certainly overcome the problem with modern ( but, swinging etc..) hingies. That's cheating :wink:

A folded T hinge would do the job. i.e. take a normal T hinge and the fold it 90 degrees, a door width away from the hinge and then fix around the door edge.

The fold would probably have to be done during manufacture to retain its strength though you may be able to get away with a cold fold followed by a few minutes with a blow torch. Maybe. Not really my expertise. I would also assume that the modification will reduce the strength of the hinge so I would want a larger than normal one to start with.

Or you could consider using butt hinges to hang the door and cutting off the straps from a pair of T hinges to fix on the other side. Cheating, but how many people would notice?

Does the door have to open outwards into the hall? The easiest technical solution to your problem would be to re-arrange the butts so that the door opens inwards, like the other ones.

However, I appreciate that sometimes there are other constraints on the direction of opening.
