Tanking removal

Hi everyone hoping that someone may have an idea on how to remove tanking from living room wall. At the moment hubby is using a hammer drill but even that isn’t shifting it easily. Thanks in advance

You will probably need an SDS hammer drill with chisel drill bits, that's what we used to remove internal cement plaster put in after an unnecessary DPC from our brick built cottage. Bloody awful job though, you'll have dust everywhere for ages afterwards. Good Luck!

Can you tell us something about the walls construction, what material the tanking is made of and what you might be planning to do afterwards please? Some photos may also be helpful if you have them.

The room we are removing it from is the living room. The tanking is like concrete and really hard. The original walls beneath it are stone and we are hoping to repoint and paint over them.

If it’s that hard you could use a wall chaser and set depth according then use sds drill with chisel bit would certainly get the worst off make sure you use a hoover on wall chaser otherwise the dust will fill the whole house! All the best

If you are lucky and can get behind it, you might be able to lever it off in pieces. Being hard means that it may be brittle.

Our builder managed in our place, some of it came off in almost sheets. If I found out who thought it would be a good idea to inject a damp proof then tank with bullet proof render a 2 foot thick stone wall I would give them a very stern re-education...

Quite a lot of lime has gone back in order to try and solve the problems that the tanking caused - I really hope that it works.. Luckily the front wall was only dry lined so that could be removed with a spoon, the plasterboard was so wet :shock:

Yes the same has been done to our two foot stone wall. It makes you want to cry. The plaster above the tanking comes off really easily where it is so damp.

I've got all this to look forward to. The cheap emulsion they put on to sell the place is now peeling off in sheets on the upper walls. Good job I got it cheap and figured remedial action into the costs. If I'd been a normal buyer I'd be crying right now.

I'd be very careful indeed pulling off slabs of concrete. If the old bond between the stones is weaker than the bond between the stones and the concrete then it's quite easy to find you are pulling the wall down by mistake.

I think the size limit for photos is 600kb... anyone? Shrink them in your photo editing programme.

I doubt you will get the stones clean, that is to say as if they had never been rendered. In terms of aesthetics, you may be better off lime plastering, but not aiming to get it flat. Wavy, following the contours of the wall. The technique is known as bagging and preserves the texture of the stone.

This site is rather defensive about photos in particular and will only allow them to be displayed in the text if they are made available through another publicly shared service - I have not tried with very small photos as Ivor suggests though. The easiest solution, and the one typically used by PP UK members, is Tiny Pics (http://tinypic.com). You will have to sign up with them and upload the photos you want to share and then copy the url they provide for each photo in turn so that you can paste it into your text on this site.

Frankly its a real faff but PP UK uses some really antiquated - naturally - web software. If you have any problems Tiny Pics help service is ok and other members may also be able to help.

That's not quite true - Ivor is right about small photos. There's an 'Attachments' tab below any PPUK reply window by which photos can be selected, uploaded and placed anywhere within the reply as desired. It's also possible to simply drag-n-drop a photo into a PPUK reply.

The key thing is for the photo to be fairly small. I find that photos no wider than 800 pixels usually work fine (though it depends on the content and thus the compression efficiency, but it's a good starting point).
By way of example the photo below is 532x800 pixels and 163KB and I simply dragged it into this reply window from my Windows File Manager (other computers are available!)

Well that seemed to work but adding an attachment and then dragging and dropping the attachment filename into the text body is a little counter-intuitive.

Thanks Flyfisher, that should help me in the future but I guess only with small photos.

Yes, a small photo is the key to it. I think it's possible to include up to three small photos per post.

Positioning the photo within the text of a post is, I agree, a little counter-intuitive but it's not absolutely necessary to bother with that, in which case the photo is simply appended to the end of the post.

This one, added as an Attachment, is only 135kb




If one hovers over each pic when making the selection, the size show up.

I don't understand why some present very small on the screen but others such as this are quite a decent size. There must be a correlation between kb and size, no doubt something boffinly such as FF has alluded to.
