Talloy & Lime paint?

Hello everyone. I'm a newbie to this forum so apologies if this has been asked before.

A deceased plasterer friend of mine reassured us about painting our newly rendered Cornish Cottage with Talliy & Lime paint. That he had used it on his listed property in Bristol many years ago. We trusted him and he made it for us from Pigs fat, lime chips and water in a new metal lidded bin.

I was enthused and remember it erupting in the bin to the point he had to put concrete blocks on the lid to keep it on.

After it had cooled down the following day he then used as his concentrate and diluted it to a milk like consistency and it was and has been amazing.

Sadly this was some years ago and I need to make more but don't know how much talloy to use against the lime chips and water.

If anyone can advise me I'd be very grateful!

You have already received a reply to your request on another site but, from watching the video, there does not seem to be a recommended amount of fat to include. Whether there's a relationship to the fat content/purity seems also to be a mystery.

May be worth a little experimentation.

This is why I submitted this request. That was made a good few years ago, we got distracted with other issues and I'm now back to needing it done again.... but would like to make my own like my old friend did for us.

The chap making the mix in the video rather reminds me of a baker who can, through some uncanny form of muscle memory, weigh out the various ingredients of a cake without using a set of scales or reference to a recipe. I think there may be little choice but to suck it and see.

By chance, while researching this, I've also learned that some culinary pedants refer to rendered Beef or Lamb fat as Tallow, Fig fat as Lard and Chicken Fat as Schmaltz. Whether all of these can be used to make the water-proof lime wash is unclear but at least there's a kosher option.

There are lots of companies out there selling the stuff. Just Google 'tallow bound limewash'

Ingleby's claim to use the Suffolk Preservation Society recipe which I couldn't find with a quick search, but you could contact them...
