Tall pretty radiators

Can anyone recommend any?

All the radiators here are the bog standard flat things, 2 metres long, 80 cm high, that sit under windows. We're making progress with the tented Campaign Room now and have chucked out the old rad. Because of the twin beds I've bought for that room there's no longer space for a great big ugly flat radiator anyway. I want to put a little upright radiator behind the door. If that won't work the whole floor will have to be lifted and a rad plumbed into a little bit of wall on the opposite side where the door won't open into it.

The only one I've found that seems any good is this, which seems awfully expensive.

I try not to let weather depress me but this is beyond a joke now. Even my Landrover is struggling to get in and out.

They're pretty radiators, thanks - haven't seen them before! The BTU thingy is huge on them, I guess I need to work out what we need.

I've got 3 of those Acova radiators, very nice they are too.

I really must get them out of the garage where they've been stored for the last 3 years and get around to fitting them! :lol:

I think I've missed something here. Why a towel radiator in a bedroom, is there a basin in there? I've got a hammock somewhere that would match that bedroom.. :lol:

Doug, the theme of this guest room is Napoleon's Campaign in Egypt. If there were space I'd definitely put in a Campaign wash stand, and I really did toy with 19th C army beds, but comfort won out and the mattresses will be from John Lewis

As His Lordship only allows the heating on for 2 hours a day anyway the look of the thing is far more important than what it does. And there is an open fire in the room. And a guest loo next door, so maybe quite useful for guests to hang their towel here, and dry out their uniforms? ( which will have to be 19th C campaign towels, and red jackets with gold braid...)

Joce for the price of some of them you could buy a genuine antique towel rad two or three times over.

These are stupidly expensive but I have seen them around in nickle plate for less than 500 quid.

I paid 35 quid for mine off ebay , the same as the ones above except mine does not fold over into two.
To me there is a huge difference between repro and genuine.

Oh they're lovely Rob. Yes please! Any chance of any piccies of yours? Will have a look at a few architectural antique places, then, and see if any can be spotted. I know what you mean about the genuine thing being so much more characterful and interesting than the repros. But alas, I don't have your talent for getting the things going again.

Doug - that's quite a big question there! I've a lovely book " British Egyptology 1549 -1902" if you want to borrow it :wink: A massive way had been paved into fascination with ancient Egypt in the 16th and 17th C, and tourism was kicking off in the 18th. Napoleon was fascinated with Egypt but I suspect every bold adventurous young man of that time was too. But yes, very fashionable at that time to the point that dresses featured necks and hems encrusted with little metal Pharoahs and sphinxes were as ten a penny!

Do you have a spare corner? Does it have to be a towel rail?

There are options for discrete antique radiators, probably more options than modern repro rads.

These corner rads are lovely and I bet they belt out the heat.

Probably pricey from these guys but you never know.

Depending on the size of room I doubt a towel rail will provide the room with any comfortable heat, where heating is concerned I usually over engineer the rad size, my thinking is I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I will try to get a photo of my rail tomorrow if I get over to the cottage.

Those copper towel rails really are fantastic. I often wish that I could find something new that I could genuinely say I thought was the best of what is available, but almost always something old will pop up that I like better. New things often function well, but are not often attractive. I think genuine old is the way to go in your campaign room!

Oh, thanks for all the links everyone - I'm having a very interesting browse. Love the reclaimed old radiators posted by Joss, and those red corner rads! Never seen anything like them - sadly sold or I'd seriously consider them for the dining room ( corners pretty full up in the Campaign Room)

Doug - I like that and what a bargain! Will show His Lordship.


Clearly going to have to do a bit more measuring and thinking. The old designs often had a lot more workmanship and better materials going into them, but buying new gives a vast choice. I agree old would look better as I've already bought the antiques for the room.

Of course a high BTU will give you a warmer room in less time, so in your two hours you'll feel a difference, but will also use far more fuel in that time
