Taking a break with a period property slant.

I've got a weekend off in February for my birthday, and was thinking of a weekend away.

The top two destinations so far are the Durham area and Lincoln. Mainly because they are areas I've never been before.

I'm hoping some local people can give me ideas as to what I could do in these areas, particularly with a period property slant. I'm particularly interested in anything to do with interiors of the late Georgian or early Victorian period. Local towns with good antiques shops.

Plus the man I'm dragging along loves a nice tweed suit, so if there is a particular town offering some nice menswear shops that might make a nice target for an afternoon drive.

Are you aware that Lincoln holds one of the largest steampunk gatherings in the UK each year ?

This would make it my choice of places to visit.

My best suggestion is to skip Lincoln and stay in the George in Stamford. You could I suppose visit Lincoln Cathedral on the Sunday. Lincoln is impoverished and sad and though the top of Steep Hill is well worth a visit the rest of it is a bit of a dump!

Stamford on the other hand is an exquisite Georgian town with plenty of tweed shops and The George is to die for both for food and accommodation. I had an amazing weekend there last weekend and the late rate was £115 for one night whereas it's usually £250. With the £115 there was an obligation to dine in the restaurant which is a serious indulgence and well worth it!

I don't think many of the local houses are open - Burghley, Belton, but you would be most welcome to drop in for a cuppa and look at this early 19th C interior!

Thank you Joce, that's really useful I know the two places I've chosen are probably a bit lacking, that's why I've not been there previously. Stamford sounds ideal for a possible location, within the area. I've read so many of your posts it would be a bit weird seeing the house, but I will check with my travel partner and see what he thinks xx
