Suspended flooring

Good Morning

Please help? Is there a list of joist dimensions that I can refer to? We wish to install a suspended floor in an old farmhouse between existing collar beams and I wonder if there is reference sheet of proper joist sizes in relation to the lengths that they will span.

Our requirement is urgent as nobody here has a clue about wooden joists to support 3.5cm wooden floor boards. Any assistance gratefully received from an ignorant DIY builder

You can google `building regs` which should eventually lead you to tables for maximum spans for floor, ceiling and rafters.
If not, post your span and I`ll look it up for you.

id be inclined to get a structual enginner to put his name to it......

if its wrong and your floor sage or you end up in the room below he will be paying for it....

It isn't really rocket science, more woodwork. I think it's a bit sad that we are encouraged to ask an 'expert' just so we can have someone to sue if bad stuff happens. Isn't it better for individuals to think for themselves and take responsibility for their own actions, instead of making sure there is someone else to blame.

Hi all and Happy Easter.

I too think that we should all take more responsibility for our own actions, but what exactly are these collars?
In normal building they are ties which stop the rafters spreading. Even if they are beams which run from wall to wall and with correctly sized floor joists you would still need to know whether they were strong enough and correctly supported to take the load imposed by a new floor in use. So if you don't know what size joists you need in the first place then I would hazard a guess that an eyeball from a building professional might be a good thing. Never mind Building Control who might just be interested in your plans.
You could end up in the room below with a ton of roof in your lap!
Please, I'm just stating the case as I see it not trying to upset anyone.

Like Luke, I'm a bit worried about your description of placing flooring joists (and a floor) "between existing collar beams". Are you definitely talking about collars that span between rafters (usually roughly halfway up the rafter - or thereabouts)?
If so, then I think the suggestion of getting a structural engineer to have a look might be a good one. You could be placing some new stresses on your rafters, and you need to be sure that they are up to the job.
Can you post back a precise description (or sketch) of the arrangement of these "collar beams"?

No, i wonder, I wasn't getting "arsey". I was just making the point that while getting a structural engineer may be a good idea if the object is to get useful information, your suggestion "to get a structural engineer to put his name to it...if it's wrong and your floor sags or you end up in the room below he will be paying for it" just gets you bad karma.

I don't like the 'blame culture'.
