Hi All, We are soon to move into a 7000 Sq ft Victorian house and although it was refurbished around 10 years ago we have loads to do and buy to make it how we would like, We are moving from a much smaller new build so need to try and fill the place with furniture in keeping with the property, Paintings, quality period paint, tiles, fittings,stained glass, lamps, rugs, Gate posts etc etc.

I have started getting some company catalogues together but would welcome any gem suppliers that the forum users have come accross and can reccomend, I have just purchased one of the reccomended books listed on this website which I think has a suppliers section as well as lots of ideas for interiors.

For Victorian furniture and paintings I would suggest auction houses. Christies South Kensington, Bonhams, Dreweatt Neate, Wooley & Wallis are some of the better ones. A good catch-all site to interrogate for upcoming lots is: http://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues. Sotheby's, Christies' posher saleroom in King Street and Bonham's dont put there lots here so you need to look at their websites.

Hello Paul, and welcome.

I shouldn't try and fill your house with gateposts. While I'm broadly supportive of eccentricity, I suspect this would be a step too far. :wink:

I should have a trawl around your local architectural reclamation yards (just make sure you only go to ones who support the Salvo code, in order to avoid the possibility of vandalised or dishonestly obtained goods). Many of them sell far more than just building materials.

But beware - they can be addictive!

thyese guys do Bakelite light switches in some nice styles , they are in Australia but still cheaper than buying here , even with shipping.
Apparently Australia is the only place that still makes bakelite , dont know if the switches confirm to british regs though.

Hi Paul.
Wellcome and have fun in recreating the interior of a bygone era to live in.

It should be reasonably easy to recreated the interior of a victorian property as most genuine or reproduced articles are available ( internet etc..). Also, as Penners suggested, All your local ( ish !? salvage yards, boot sales antique shops and smaller auction houses are a very good source to obtain Victorian memorobiliar.
With carefull thinking one can recreate a stunning interior of a victorian living space including all " spoiling" mod cons.

The major challenge is the "harmonic fusion" of the challenging dominant dark colours of browns, greens and blacks.
Get it right and "stunning" is the end product, get it "out of sinc." and it might not be to everybody's taste.

( then again you may not want to please everybody apart from you and\or your family :wink: )
