My brother owns a large Victorian in Derbyshire, and it has always had all sorts of damp problems, being situated on a steep hill. One particular issue was that one room smelt of dampness, and there were signs of damp in the corner. It turned out that he had used modern paint in the past and so I suggested something more suitable and breathable, such as Earthborn clay paint; this is often recommended here but I have never used it myself, but I trusted everyone's advice. He used this and knew that it had fixed the problem, as the smell went very quickly.
I visited him last weekend for the first time in ages and he showed me the room in question - there is no sign or smell of damp at all, and it looks great. He is absolutely delighted with this paint, and is now a convert to the right way of doing things with old buildings. (Shame he didn't know all this 25 years ago!)
Thought I'd pass on the thanks of a satisfied non-forumite!
