Subfloor flora...

Turns out our subfloor was more alive than we thought...dont suppose anyone has seen something like this before? It seems that it has managed to grow through the floorboards and the underlay. It then died and we discovered the remains today when we lifted the floorboards. We removed all of it, it was approximately a foot wide.

I can't tell from the pictures - was that a plant originally growing downwards inside or is it roots coming through from outside? (Or both, I suppose, if there was a sucker inside...)

Only thing I know of a plant that grows through wood and even concrete and cause structure damage is the common Japanese knotweed. Its very damaging and highly spreadable. I had to sort it out at my fathers car garage on 2007.

It looks much too tame for knotweed, doesn’t that come into the house, eat everything in the fridge and then destroy the floors on the way out?

My impression is that it was growing under the joists and it got through the holes between them. You can see the top edges coming through them the 1st photo. The area it was growing is a few inches away from the party wall and the property wall facing the back garden but I couldn't see how it can possibly found its way in.

I think its that very odd plant that only grows in Little Shops of Horror - best be nice to it.

Ha yeah. It reminds me of a old friend walks in my house makes, eats my food, stays and destroy my house and leaves once I kick him out but some how comes back but with more people. Lol

If you first get a sample and take it to a place maybe garden centre they will identify it for you. It will mostly likely be some weed u can get rid off. If it is knotweed then you can then form a plan to tackle it. As this stuff knocks something like 30 percent off your house value.

Those roots look pretty dead to me as they appear desiccated, do they snap or break easily? If they still have some ‘bend’ in them then they may be connected to something that’s still alive.
