Does anybody know if this skill still exists-- ?

I would guess that there will be textile conservators who would be familiar with it and that there may even be courses available. Is there a particular reason that you ask? A couple of my friends are quite serious collectors and have contacts, albeit mostly in the sphere of S.E Asian materials ( I limit myself to Japan, unless it's something I can legitimately say I might wear ), but may be able to recommend something if I know what you are looking for. If it's in relation to learning how to then the Emboiderers Guild http://www.embroiderersguild.org.uk/ might help.

Ladies, thank you for your more perceptive suggestions, duly followed up.
Was just looking for some either the real macoy antique offcut or a repro piece or two to cover a jewellery box. (just a whim) .

Joss - my guess is that it would take you quite a while to track down what you want and when you found it, it would be expensive.
Why not use the time to make a piece of your own? I'm sure the Embroiderers' Guild would be able to point you in the direction of a book that would show you how to do it.

Embroidery is sooooo slow, that's the thing, you have to love doing it and it takes years to be good at it (I'm not at all).

Jocelyn - I'm always pottering about antiques centres, if I see a lovely piece of stumpwork that's not an outrageous price I'll give you a ring. xxx

Get a machine to do it - far quicker and just as good quality... :roll:
