I am in the midst of renovating the cast iron railings on the balcony of my 1860s built property and was interested to know if anyone else had successfully attempted this. If so, what were the most efficient ways you found of removing layers of old paint? So far, I have used paint stripper/wire brush, an angle grinder for flat surfaces and Dremel with grinding point for the detailed sections but there is still a lot of work to do!

We had great success stripping 5+ layers of paint off a very detailed bay window using a hot air gun and a scrapper. If there are lots of spindles etc a paint stripper like Peel Away or Klingstrip might be an easier solution but I have no real experience of these other than trying a sample of the Peel Away on the bay window....it stripped the paint but was very messy

If you are using a heat gun, don't breath the fumes in especially if there is a chance of old lead based paint being there.
