Some of you may remember I joined the forum with this question - how long ago that seems, and how completely clueless I was then.
Anyway, the upshot of it was I had a go myself, made a pig's ear, got some quotes, (10k + excluding any re-rendering) and have sat despairing about it ever since. But DWB - Wonderwoman came over last night with her amazing Makita breaker and showed me how to make mincemeat of it without doing much damage at all to the Ancaster stone underneath. Going carefully along the mortar course, and then above, and only going in at a restricted depth, it can be persuaded to fall off in largish chunks. In about a hour we cleared 2 square metres, and the house isn't huge, and effectively it's single storey as lots is underground.
So I'm now back to thinking that this can be a DIY job.
I'm also now in doubt that it was ever rendered, there's no evidence of any lime render at all, it's all cement. :? So I'm also back to wondering what to do about that, I guess no decision can be made until it's all off. The stone's beautiful though, and this new section we uncovered is less damaged and looks like it was given a face.
What an amazing resource this forum is, it's both community and very real, practical help.
And huge thanks to Jaqi too, who has potentially saved me 10k, beer on us for quite a while I think! xx
