stricky green stuff....

Is there anyone out there who can answer my curiosity ? I have just been removing some old wiring
and in the ring main ( twin core and earth ) there is a sticky green substance in two of the junction
boxes and in some sections of the cable; enough to stain the inside of the cable. I assume it is
something to do with copper oxidisation but neither the cable nor the junction boxes were exposed
to air or water. Any ideas ?

If you google you will find quite a few people who have found this gunk but little on what actually causes it. I've found it in both my old and my current house and searched for it a while back. The best comments suggested it was moisture that caused it with condensation being the favourite culprit.

Have finally found the answer, for the benefit of anyone who comes across this green goo.
It is common in wiring done in the 1960`s, 1970`s and is the result of a chemical reaction
between a component of the French chalk added to ease wire stripping and the copper wire.
It took about ten years to become obvious when green fluid started to ooze out of sockets
and junction boxes.
