Hot news, eh? Presumably this is a modified definition of the word "just"!

good search facility on it, I tried looking for listed properties in staffordshire and it returned 2 in Bucks and 8 in cheshire for the first page :roll:

The search facily is not great, and not all buildings are on it.

It's better if you register, the searches seem to give a different and more comprehensive result.

More up to date is Listed Buildings Online, but it's not available to the general public and you need a password to access.

Barmy I know but there you go.

What is interesting with IoE is reading the original listing descriptions then seeing recent pics.

An awful lot of the buildings simply wouldn't be listed now, the alterations have been so detrimental.

Owners can request photos not to be published on IoE, although I think this is only for about 10 years or so, so this is presumably one reason why they are not all listed. Also, some listed buildings won't be visible from a public place and EH would then need permission to access the land to take a photo.

I've read there are some security concerns about the IoE website and such resources have been cited as one cause for a rise in rural crime.

I do wonder why this should be. After all, if a villain is planning to "do over" a few houses in a certain neighbourhood, isn't he more likely to take a drive or a stroll around the place than just look at the listed buildings online?

I should have thought that the number of people in evidence, sounds of dogs, open windows, etc. would be much more important to him than an X-year-old photo.

No, it's not photos - the photos are not all there - it's because it was meant to be a Millenium thing, all building listings up to then put on. EH doesn't take the photos. Those are taken by volunteers.

It was never intended to be updated.

All listing details are readily available in an area at the public library, and the local authority offices, from the DCMS etc.

Geograph, google earth, the OS maps - all have buildings on them, so I hardly think security can be a major issue.

Dear me - isn't it obvious big houses have treasures in them? And I have a large collection of photos of buildings - all taken from public places.

The contents are not listed on I o E and the information there is freely available.

I suggest that we organise a coach trip to go and stand on the public highway staring for ten minutes at every building whose owners are so paranoid they insisted it be left off Images of England.

I did have to deal with phone calls about it from some surprisingly mad people...

Evidence for what? That some people are concerned? Clearly, some are. Whether their concern is warranted is another matter.

If you're so happy with it, perhaps you'd like to post a photo of your house and it's address here? Or maybe someone else should?

My house isn't listed - although available via google earth as are most - but I think the Torygraph is making a mountain out of a molehill. It's a newspaper and that's what it does. As indeed are you.

The evidence that homes are now being routinely burgled because of IoE. What was the excuse before IoE? Theft isn't new.

The IoE hasn't details of ownership or contents, and any photos must have been taken from a public place, as with Geograph.

And I repeat - the information is freely available at the local library and has been for years.

Does it matter if your house is not listed? Perhaps you could start a trend for unlisted houses?

I think the point is that such a database makes such information much more freely accessible and, therefore, easier to abuse. I'm sure all the info could already be found by going to the local library and trawling through loads of books, but it's not as easy as a few mouse clicks is it?
