Stone roof

Hello,

I'm in the process of buying a house with a stone roof and looking for a buildings insurance quote online. I'd really like to avoid speaking to a call centre if at all possible!

The drop down boxes for selecting roofing material offer slate, tile, concrete or other which then gives further options but none for stone. Does anyone know which box I should tick? I'm leaning towards tile, but that suggests clay rather than stone to me!

Slate is a sedimentary metamorphic rock. So, just one type of stone. That would be the option I'd pick when looking for quotes. When it comes to actually taking out the policy, discuss the roof material with the insurers (in writing).

Indeed, but insurance companies can be slippery about definitions. I recall a story many years ago about a householder claiming for damage by masonry bees. Their policy covered ‘damage by animals’ but the insurance company rejected the claim on the basis are bees are insects and not animals!
