stained stone

Our sandstones are stained in places from a previous leaky chimney now closed up.The brown carbon deposits are seeping into my areas of patching up ( lime mortar) and I'm worried they will effect the next harled layer and all subsequent layers on top ? All done in lime mortar.

Anyone got any ideas on how to deal with these stones;The surface has been penetrated some way by the deposit so we can't just wash it off.

It's a subject that has come up before, so more searching might reveal more answers. Unfortunately, fresh cow dung is high on the list of suggestions.

omg our Italian neighbours already think we are pazzi (crazy) how am I going to explain that I need fresh cow dung to put on my wall!!

Actually I do remember reading in that book ' Extra virgin' by Annie Hawes that her father- in -law used cow dung to repair a bread oven so possibly I won't appear too eccentric after all ?

Absolutely!!! We've been 13 years doing our house and I wouldn't swap a minute of it

I thought 3 years was a long time but I suppose when you total it up thats only 8 whole weeks per year we can spare to work on the house.

I will try to source that dung and let you know how it goes!
