Let's hope that the damage isn't too extensive, now we know no-one was hurt. All that restoration work...

I love that building. I've never been inside, but I have an ambition to spend a night there, once it's been restored to a working hotel.

I endorse Nemesisisis' rec of the book on this wonderful Station/Hotel. very readable but I wish the plan had been bigger.

I also love that building. Hopefully the damage is not too great.
It does seem that renovation works might be one of the biggest risks such historical buildings ever face - Windsor Castle, Cutty Sark and now this one. OK, hardly a comprehensive analysis but worrying nevertheless.

Add warehouses on the Quayside at Newcastle - damaged by fire but not destroyed - so a few years later they tried again - yes the site is being redeveloped now.
There is a nice building in Manchester which is visible from Platform 14 of Piccadilly Station near where they are building a ginormous new Hall of Res for the Uni.* It suffered from fire a couiple of years ago and I wonder how long before it is deemed beyond saving and becomes a block of trendy flats.
*That is as far as I get in Manchester, I usually have half an hour or so to wait for a connecting train there ....

Update - this week's Private Eye has a piece by Piloti on the fire.
It's too long to quote it all, but it seems that very sad damage was done to the entrance hall, some of the original features of which had survived the long closure and neglect unscathed. He makes comparison with other dreadful fires - Uppark for one - and wonders why workmen with blowtorches are still being let loose on Grade I buildings.
'The fire began in the basement of the hotel and was started by contractors who were 'hot working' to strip out pipes in a sevice duct. The fire spread rapidly up the duct to the ground floor. The most damage was done to the old hotel entrance opening off the Euston Road. This is an elaborate interior with a gilded and carved stone and marble screen and painted decoration. It survived the closing of the old hotel in 1935 and the subsequent neglect. Now thw stone screen and the stone surrounds to the windows are damaged, as are the wall surfaces. It can all be recreated, but it won't be the same,. Original fabric of the 1870's has been lost.
This was not the first fire during the St Pancras restoration. Earlier, fire broke out in the Esat Side Buildings of the station and it is rumoured that two original large oak dray road doors were destroyed. In each case the contractor was Laing O'Rourke... This firm... was part of the consortium that began work on the station project. Whaever its merits, it is not a firm known for its expertise or indeed interest in the field of conservation.'
