Sprinkler Systems - any advice ?

Hi,
We have been given LBC to remove our modern pine staircase and replace it with an oak 90 degree winder plus a second one to sit on top of it which will give us proper access to the converted loft area of our house. In order to avoid us having to install self closing fire doors, Building Control have suggested we install a domestic sprinkler system throughout the fire escape route. This sounds sensible and I understand that it won't stand out too much, but having no experience on this matter wonder if anyone else here has and can give us an idea of approx costs, providers,whether we can install ourselves or anything else useful.

Like you, I have no experience whatsoever of domestic sprinkler systems, but I imagine it's one of those situations where no two systems are ever the same - it all depends on the property and the requirements.

Mr Google gave me lots of results (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=domestic+sprinkler+systems&meta=&aq=0&oq=domestic+sprinkler+system). I suggest you contact one or two companies and discuss their products/your requirements.

I lived in a house in Colorado that had one fitted by the landlord and it was a real headache, the tops used to get run over by the lawnmower and so every time popped up to water the directional jets used to spray water into the road and all over the footpath (sidewalk over there!) and the grass remained bone dry!!!! It was strictly controlled as to what time you could water and you used to have the local news say every night "Remember folks, odd number watering tonight between 2am and 4am" and if the water police drove by after and your sprinkler was stuck on it was a $150 fine stuck on the door in a massive dayglo orange plastic envelope so all your neighbors knew you were wasting water!!!

It had the same stigma as using plastic bags in the shops instead of reusable ones or not recycling your rubbish over here.

Just make sure that the heads are hard wearing.

You might want to check whether you even need sprinklers or self closing doors at all or if smoke detectors would suffice. The rules were relaxed in 2006

Self-Closing Devices: Other than doors between a dwellinghouse and an integral garage, fire doors need not be provided with self closing devices.
