Sovereign Plaster

Just wondering if anyone has used the above instead of limelite?

We priced limelite and was roughly £16 a bag with VAT on. We done some investigation and the flood area housing in the UK are being coated with the Sov Plaster. This is basically Limelite plaster, but re-baged under a diff branding. Spoke to Tarmac and the likes and they highly recomended this.

Its 3-1 (3 plaster 1 finish) so we bought 16 bags at a cost of £130 total. This is cheaper than limelite and sounds like it will do more than the job to cure a damp problem if it arrises in a external wall with 9 inch brick. There is no damp there at present, but we are renovating the room and when we chased cables we took the loose plaster off which was Lime based.

I will let you know how it behaves, but just wondered if anyone has used this and if not why not?

Cos it's not actually lime plaster, and in general for period buildings it's recommended that lime putty is used to plaster with.

Tarmac wouldn't be my first choice of expertise when it comes to period property advice either.


As for curing a damp problem - find the cause, eliminate the cause.

PS limelite is called that cos it's pretty lite on lime too.

As Nemesis says, limelite isnt lime plaster, and plaster doesnt cure damp problems - though its often used to mask them for a while.

Nearly all PPs do best with lime plaster, 3:1 sand : bagged lime.

according to the tech sheets and the guy's there its lime based and designed for 9inch/solid walls and allows for any moisture in the wall to dry out and stop the salt coming in.

As I mentioned there is no damp problem, its just the fact its 9 inch brick wall without cavity on a external wall.

The Plaster is called renderlite.

Yes well - lime based isn't lime.

We have had posts about it before.

It's another quick fix really - it contains some lime. But it's possible to splosh splosh and depart with the dosh dosh.

Yes well. We know how popular chemical injection is - some make a great deal of cash from it. Prevention - hmmmm. Was there any there in the first place?

And nothing replicates the 'old' lime plaster as well as new lime plaster. Best really though to keep the original where possible.

It's cheaper too.

Do you have a major salt problem?

The PDF gives renderlite as being cementitious and drying rapidly.

Great for the contractor - allows for a quick fix.

It's also the belt and braces for the chemical injection.

I wouldn't use it.

No Damp its just a precaution.

We noticed the floors had no membrane in this area, smashed them up and put a lime base down which has set like a dream all credit to my dad who aint worked with it before, but we used info from lime suppliers mentioned on this site.

Problem we have found in North Yorkshire is anyone with an understanding of what we want to achieve regards to plasterer's. We want the house to work as it has 100 years, but it has been tarted up with browning in that room and the likes and we want to keep original. We have removed bricks and put back and pointed with the lime and all is good.

We are just being anal I guess, to treat the house like family which means dress it in what it feels comfortable in.

When we spoke to the guys at Sov its for walls without cavitys and for solid brick walls to deal with moisture through the brick.

We have not went with any injections as we think the house is happy and may not like being poked and proded with evil chemicals. But since we have had to replace the plaster we went with a recomendation after even speaking to local councils and people/users of sov of 20 years.

There is a department at the university that does lime work tutorials from time to time. Cant find the reference at the moment, but I've seen the adverts.

Chalk Hill Lime - used to be Rydale Conservation - is good stuff and nice friendly people.

Those plasters are not lime. Containing lime and other things does not make them behave like lime. Forget the sales lines and use whats appropriate, 3:1 lime.

If you read the bba cert it is a cement based plaster intended for use after dpc installation. That tells you that it is def not breathable - It is intended to be topcoated after 24 hours and be ready for decorating quickly. It is probably one of the worst things you could apply to your house.

Note - the main component is PORTLAND CEMENT. It's NOT proper lime plaster at all. there's some hydrated lime added and other things. Anyone who has bought this after being told it's lime plaster - I'd ask for my money back and consider a report to Trading Standards.


If you have damp penetrating though the wall - then I would suggest that it's because there is a problem with pointing, gutters, etc. Better to fix that than use this stuff!

If lime plaster is 3:1 sand to hydrated lime. And lime mortar is 3:1 sand to hydrated lime, what's the difference?

Except it's usual to make mortar from a slightly more coarse aggregate.

Lime plaster is often 2:1, 3:2 or sometimes even 1:1. The sand used is also finer. Lime mortar is 3:1 or occasionally 3.5:1 with a range of sand grain sizes. The extra lime in the plaster makes it a lot easier to spread once knocked up.
