Sourcing Brass Rim Locks

Hi,

I am trying to find some brass rimlocks to put on out newly stripped 4 panel doors. I've tried the Yale ones from homebase and from Ridgeons but they are not quite the right size. The "lip" that goes over the doors edge isnt deep enough. I've tried looking online but cannot find anything that looks like it will work.

If i cannot find something to fit the doors we might have to replace them whcih is something i really really dont want to do (house has been in the family since new in 1898)

Frank Allart make nice solid brass locks in various finishes and styles.

Were the original locks beyond repair?

You may be able to packout the recess in the door with a thin strip of wood it is too deep for new locks.

Whatever you do, I'd advise against discarding the doors - they are such an important (original) part of the house interior.

btw - honest repairs in doors, frames, architraves etc all add to the character of the house, if done well. Unfortunately, someone chucked all my original doors away. But you can still see where the original rimlocks were because the architraves have been patched after the keeps were removed.

Does the user name indicate you're in Ugley nr Saffron walden? If it is I've seen them in a fw places in town, try Market Row Antiques and collectables and Lankaster antiques, and Reeds the junk shop opposite Lankasters in always worth a look ( and they're all fascinating places if you have no luck but I know I've seen them in the first 2)

By the way, Becka... I understand that there's a Women's Institute in Ugley, called (what else?)... the Ugley Women's Institute.

However, I'm not sure if there's a Women's Institute in the nearby village of Ugley Green.

I know, I drive past there frequently and I'm always tempted to pop in and photograph every ugley sign, ugley church, ugley womens insitite etc etc.. childish, but amuses me.. :lol: apparently its pronouced oogeley, like ice luge.., but no-one else believes that.. odd really as looks like a very pretty village (apart from the Ugley refuse centre which lives up to its name)

In the village of Bildeston in Suffolk there used to be an undertaker called Death (I promise it's true!). Needless to say he insisted that it was pronounced dee-ath.

sounds like a case of nominative determinism (a New Scientist Last Word favourite) of you're called Death, what else can you do? (legally anyway..)

Ugley is pronounced Ugly any other pronouncment is wrong.

It comes from Uggas Lay (Doomsday book), briefly changed to Oakley when the Victorians got a bit snotty about it.

The Ugley WI is quite a famous one, one of the founders used to live in the villiage. We also have the Ugley Ducklings play group.

I'm so chuffed that I heard wrong plain old Ugly Ugley is sooooo much better than any pretentiousness of rhyming with luge... I stand corrected..

p.s. can definatly vouch for the locks in Lankasters in Walden, saw loads in there on saturday..

If we're being pedantic (and I'm delighted that we are! :wink: ) shouldn't that be Domesday Book?

The census that was taken for the Great Domesday (day of judgement) seems to have varied from area to area, but one asked:

The name of the place. Who held it, before 1066, and now?
How many hides? How many ploughs, both those in lordship and the men's?
How many villagers, cottagers and slaves, how many free men and Freemen?
How much woodland, meadow and pasture? How many mills and fishponds?
How much has been added or taken away? What the total value was and is?
How much each free man or Freeman had or has? All threefold, before 1066, when King William gave it, and now; and if more can be had than at present?

I wonder what the difference was between a free man and a Freeman. Anyone know?
