I've just stripped my hallway floorboards. They were covered with horrible dark floorpaint and there was some some stain underneath. After 500 gallons of Nitromors and months of stipping / light (ish) sanding, the boards look to be in reasonable condition, but the colour is uneven. I didn't get an industrial sander, just a hand held unit and some lighter finishing by hand.
To be honest I don't know about wood types, I assume the wood is oak, but it maybe pine? (house was built 1881 and the boards are original)
I've been reading the numerous threads and am unsure how to proceed. I initially thought staining would be the way to go, but am not sure whether a wax would be a better option and allow the boards to colour naturally. The boards are very light now, but presumably will darken through time. I need to prevent the boards getting dirty though....so what is the best course of action?
I found a site called "woodfinishing direct" which seems to have a number of interesting products, but would like some pointers if possible. Has anyone used the "hard wax oil" that is advertised there?
Stuart
