We are trying to decide what paint to use on our newly lime pointed sandstone walls. There is one very small wall which has not had the concrete removed and we n eed to find a paint which will be ok on this as well as the sandstone walls . This is the first of many rooms that we need to do so do not want a paint that is going to break the bank. Any suggestions please

You need to be using a breathable paint otherwise the wall will deteriorate fairly quickly as moisture will get trapped. False economy in my mind to use a "cheap" paint. You could just leave it unpainted which would be preferable to using modern non breathable paint. We've used this on part of our external wall and plan to do the rest of the exterior when I've removed the cement and replaced/turned bricks around and repointed.

If you mean internally then Claypaint is lovely stuff but horribly expensive, 'proper' limewash is incredibly cheap (not Farow & Ball but Ty-Mawr, Mike Wye or similar) but may lack durability.

Yes Mike you are right :lol: The paint is for internal wall and as I have spent so long repointing with lime mortar I do want to get the breathable paint otherwise I have been wasting my time. I have looked at Auro and Keim paint but still not sure what to buy. I still have to remove,repoint and replaster another five walls so I cannot really afford to spend a fortune on paint but may have to just leave some of the walls until I can afford it.

If you already have lime putty, it is even cheaper to make your own. Simply whisk some lime putty in to water to the consistency of milk then add a drop of linseed oil or casein. Raw pigments powders can be obtained from good quality artists stores such as Cornelissen or an old fashioned hardware store.

Whilst a silicate paint should work well on both (the cement will need a proper primer), I don't believe a lime wash would work on cement. As it won't be able to get absorbed into the cement surface of the wall and eventually carbonate, it will dry on the surface and turn to dust which will, invariably, come off on your clothes. If you use lime wash on the majority of the walls, you will need an alternative for the small area of cement. I think that's right.

Limewash is cheap. Esp homemade limewash. I don't put any additives in mine, just lime putty, water, power whisk, sieve. colour as required
Use Pozilime as a first coat on the cement area. Not so cheap but hopefully you dont need much
