I don't know if anyone saw this this evening, but it featured one of my favorite buildings - St Mary's Chuch at Wreay, Cumbria. Wierd but wonderful - designed by Sarah Losh:

I know the villagers are thrilled that it was on, and that it is getting the national recognition it deserves.

Hopefully many more visitors will follow, and make fat donations to the fund to repair the roof, which is at the end of its life.

If anyone gets the chance to visit - highly recommended.

Presumably the congregation was at full capacity that week. Then, the following week, was back to to the usual six villagers and the vicar's auntie.

It's a pretty tiny parish actually!

But the church is tiny also, and I'm so glad it's now being given the national publicity it deserves.

I took a friend there a couple of weeks' ago who is ' a leading figure' in conservation, also on the CCT advisory committee and a Trustee of the MMT too, and he was bowled over by it. There's nowhere like it. Really is a national treasure and glad it's getting this exposure.

It's now also on a new long-distance trail the Miller's Way so should be more visited.

Pretty little church. Being endowed/designed by a woman must be quite unusual for those times (although I see that she did another one locally).

Our village church is attractive, if very conventional.

Just down the road, Boxford has a very beautiful church, largely C14, with an unusual spire. It also has a slate sundial on one wall.

That's rather lovely - and I've been to Boxford actually.

Yes she designed the school - but the Losh family was well known in the region, one relative was a luminary of the Lit and Phil in Newcastle (and if my memory serves me right - Plumber's Mate will tell me if I'm wrong) his statue stands at the stair head.

The whole place is intriguing though - the graves in the little graveyard outside the mausoleum are totally original too.

One rather lovely touch is that of those bizarre creatures which take the place of gargoyles and which are actually supposed to symbolise evil fleeing from good - one of them has an open mouth and was once the smoke vent for the boiler!
