Hello again

I will soon be laying a kitchen floor with quarry tiles over the top. I have been tempted to just lay the tiles on a bed of lime as per original construction. I really don't want to dig much out as access is poor and I'm running out of time energy and determination. As I'd also like some insulation, and as my house has a slate dpc, would using celotex type expanded resin board with concrete over the top be so bad??? I could always put in a lime border!!

I don't know the answer, but you sound like a chap who is trying to get justification for doing something he knows he shouldn't :lol: I stopped doing that when I learnt it was easier to get forgiveness than permission, and if permission is denied then you have lost out on the forgiveness option too as you can't feign ignorance.

Apparently that is one of the top 10 traits of successful people. Just do what you want as it is easier to say sorry than ask for permission. you're obviously successful and I'm obviously not! I really am looking for the best solution though. I think sometimes conservationists can be tribal and dogmatic in the face of reason, and conventional wisdom not wisdom at all. For example I am now coming to the conclusion that NHL 3.5 for brickwork is pretty strong, so perhaps I have been marketed to successfully rather than choosing a product that is best for the job.

My floor was quarries laid on earth, with perhaps a sand or very weak sand lime screed. I bet this was for quickness and cheapness rather than breathability. The quarries are 1.5". How breathable are they? I would assume it is the mortar joints between them that are breathable. 100mm lime concrete in a limecrete floor above 200mm LECA that stops water being drawn up by capillary action. How breathable is that??? Only vapour will get through, and how much will permeate through 140mm of masonry? Also NHL5, is that really going to allow much vapour through??? And if the tiles are sealed with oil or wax, less still. I suppose the earth below will reach an equilibrium level of wetness that will be slightly less than if a plastic membrane was used, but by how much. I'd like to know these things!!

To be super successful the trick is to ask permission for things that you know will be approved, that boosts the innocence quotient for when you have a good idea that it would be a "no" if you asked.

Some kind of approval credit that can be used to offset the disapproval of unapproved actions at a later date should they, heaven forbid, ever come to light. Sound far too political for an autistic engineer type like me. What do you do for a job?

This is almost like another game of "Wotsits" :lol: , close, but no cigar this time I'm afraid Ivor. It's called an ankus ( various spellings as it seems to originate as a sanskrit word ) also known as an elephant goad http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant_goad. Of course all my elephants are so well trained I don't have to poke them with nasty sticks, incentivised with bananas, sweet potatoes and the promise of a swim in the pool.
