Has anyone fitted a solar vent into a bathroom? I'm looking at a company called 'MONODRAUHGHT' who manufacture sunlights/pipes and vents.

Is the equipment up to the job of ventilating a small windowless wetroom?And at £725 is it value for money?

Any thoughts?

My view is £725 is an awful lot of money for something that is less green than a normal mains powered extractor fan. (Photo voltaic cells, which I believe this uses, currently require an awful lot of energy to produce them though this may change in the future)

Is the room window-less because it doesn't have an outside wall? If there is an outside wall, my preference would be to install a small window and keep a large amount of change from £725.

I've seen light-pipes and I've seen bathroom extractor fans, but I've never seen the two combined. If Flyfisher's good idea is impractical or undesirable, have you compared the cost of your proposed system with that of simply putting in a normal bathroom extractor fan, which would cost you under £20 - here's an example - plus any fitting costs if you're not a DIYer.

Why do you have to have daylight in the bathroom? Many don't. Regulations only require an extractor fan rated at, I think, 15 litres/sec or more.

Thanks all it did seem a lot to me too.

It's not an option to put in a window and as it will be a wet room we need to be sure that the fan will be up to the job!

I have read of lime plaster being used in a bathroom ;a sort of bees-waxed Venetian finish and I'm thinking of this above the tiles.would it be practical at all?It looks as if we may have to use products in this room that we've avoided in the rest of the house which is a shame.Does anyone use lime based mix for tiles and grouting?Is it out of the question??

Tiles are applied to a wall specifically to protect the wall from water. I can't see the point of fixing and grouting the tiles with a substance that will reduce that protection. I'm also unsure about the adhesive properties of lime in this context.

However, others more knowledgeable about lime than I am may disagree.

Whether it's a wet-room or a more conventional shower or bathroom, the amount of steam produced per shower or bath should be about the same. But if you're concerned about this, there are plenty of extractor fans available that exceed the 15 litres/sec requirement.

Be sure that you get a fan with a run-on timer, so it doesn't stop when you turn out the light. I find that in our shower room a run-on of about 5 minutes is pretty effective at clearing the steam.

lime based mix for tiles and grouting

Can any of the historians on the forum tell us what earlier (ie pre-waterproof) tiling was fixed/grouted with?
My guess is that Roman baths were done with cement....

I thought it was a mixture of gluey bits and the bones of those they trampled on, on their way through..........................

Doing some more research I've found a Moroccan method of lime plastering a bathroom called tadelakt which involves using a special mix with stone, lime and fine sand then polishing with a stone and after olive soap!!

The results look wonderful!![/img]
