Its the ONLY window left alone in our house, and not replaced by some modern monstrosity. I am sure its only been saved by the conservatory, which has made it in effect an interior window. So its single glazed, glazing bars are not stuck on I'm sure. I think they are made of metal, and on the interior are flat and slightly raised from the glass, on the exterior side they are pointed, with an edge. Thick dividing window frame I assume is wood. Its such a beautiful window, and I love it. I have assumed it goes with the original build of the house, this part anyway, which would make it late 1700s, does that fit? Its a modest but not tiny cottage.View attachment 1

Early metal windows are likely to be wrought iron, but cast iron was increasingly used in the later 18th century and there was a fair bit produced in the early 19th century for cottages.
You'd need to scratch a bit of paint off to see what's underneath but perhaps you could tell us more about the house.

Hi

I hear several conflicting reports about the house. Here is an extract from a book about the village, written and 'self published' i think by a local resident some time ago. Looks fairly meticulously researched (lots info census etc).

Here is a picture of the house as it is now. Ignore hideous upvc everywhere,( it was worse - front door was made of the same until last year!) - I am assuming that the bays were a victorian addition......? There is a small cottage attached to us that is at right angles to us on the left hand side, behind that shed - again, i am assuming that it was built as one house. I was told that the front was built after the back - it has a valley in the roof, so is two rooved, if you like, but I'm not entirely sure and wonder if its just that the bays were added.

Front does look 19th century, but where you are it's just possible that the window you're asking about is a Coalbrookdale one of the late C18. Charles Brooking would be the chappy to ask (google for Brooking Collection).

Cast iron windows are listed in the Coalbrokedale catalogue of 1801, according to Tutton and Hirst Windows.

If made of metal your window is exactly and I mean exactly like our living room window, even the window catch looks the same, it is the only metal one we have although thankfully all the rest are wood, is the glass a bit wobbly too? Next door (same date) have metal windows upstairs on the dormers as well.

Does anyone know of a current manufacturer of cast iron windows?

I'd like some arch-topped cast iron windows for some outbuildings I'm putting up - they would both look the part and be secure. Blists Hill museum in Ironbridge has loads of them in their replica Victorian industrial buildings, but apparently they weren't made in their own foundry and no one appears to know where they got them from. I've tried Longbottoms, who still make items such as pavement lights, to no avail.
