Snow and dogs

A common problem it would seem. I snapped this little 'un last week while out sledging. Probably the wrong kind of snow.

Our Westie suffered the same problem, last week, albeit on a more modest scale. I neglected to photograph her - I was too busy trying to get the snowballs out of her fur, whilst leaving the majority of the coat in place.

You've never met our dog. The idea that she could be put into a shower - mildly warm or otherwise - is sheer fantasy.

She has to be bathed at least 200 yards from any form of building, in order to prevent her from soaking the entire structure. Her yells of protest also tend to provoke passers-by into calling the RSPCA.

Wow, I have never seen anything like it and we have kept dogs since I was little (although all greyhounds and rotties).

It was amusing watching the dogs play in the snow (there were a pair of them). Obviously they couldn't avoid the snow building up on their legs but they could have easily kept their faces clean if they hadn't insisted on 'bulldozing' their way through the snow. It certainly looked as though they were enjoying themselves. Or maybe they were just stupid.

Speaking as a Westie owner, I would say both.

But I've always found it interesting to see dogs' reaction to cold weather in general, and snow in particular. They all seem to be much more energetic and active in such conditions. I've often wondered whether it's some sort of instinctive way to keep warm, or whether it is just sheer enjoyment. Or perhaps the a mixture of the two.
