We are currently rennovating a red-bricked terraced house built about 100 years ago. In one room there is the smell of sweaty socks coming from the wall. There was a slight gap at the door frame that we polyfillered but the smell is too strong. Does anyone know what causes this and how to get rid of it?

Is it an interior wall made of plaster over laths with a space in the middle? It could be that some wee beastie has found its way into the space (from the attic perhaps) and dragged something nasty in there.

hopefully it is dead!
seriously though if the smell is so strong and u can isolate it to a close area I think a look behind the the laths or under the adjoining floor (if suspended timber) is called for.
