Small cottage doors?

Hi,

i'm looking to source some small cottage doors for my georgian farmhouse. A mixture of 6 panel internals and an external door are needed - but all of the commercially avalable ones are 6'6" tall - mine are cicra 6'.. specifically the current ones to match are softwood and painted.

you might be better talking to a local joiner - doesn't have to be a bells and whistles posh company, just a good joiner could make something. or google 'made to measure' doors?

Unless you can find these in a reclamation yard or someone has spare ones you have no choise but have them made to measure by your nearest joinery firm.

If they are of the simple ledged and braced construction you can easily make them yourself with the very basic of DIY tools.

There are places on eb#y that have literally thousands of doors. I think you might struggle to get panelled doors made by a joiner.

I'm quite handy at joinery, and had considered making them myself. I'll have a better trawl of the web and if not I'll go it myself.

oooh in that case, axminster tools do a "thing" for the bevelled edges of the inside of the panels.

Given that you have some originals to match you simply need to make a good drawing showing proportions, section thicknesses and moulding details, then approach some of your local joinery firms. By getting the doors made you will be able to specifiy a much better quality of timber than is used in most current off-the-peg doors (Doug Fir, perhaps?), as well as matching the detailing of the originals. You may find, for example, that your originals are a bit thinner than those currently available.

If you are opting for a paint finish then you might cheat a bit by using, say, birch ply for the panels rather than solid timber. This should reduce cost and make for a more stable door. (Cue Penners with equine joinery joke...) Not as authentic though.

Round our way the joinery firms are keen for trade. If it's the same with you then you should be able to negotiate a fair price and relatively quick delivery.

As everyone else has said, find your local joiner, and they'll knock 'em up for you. I should know, its what I do!! Dont worry too much about the the quality of the timber, a decent joiner wont supply you with rubbish. Google joiner [insert area here] and check out some websites, pick one/two/three that you are comfortable with and make contact, we aren't a scary bunch and a lot of us like this kind of work.

Exactly right.
Too many people either always buy ready-made or go to firms that advertise expensive bespoke carpentry.
As with so many jobs, a person who actually does things often isn't as expensive as a firm who employs people to do things.
Also IME the best worker is often the cheapest because their skills are higher and they have the ability to finish work quickly and effectively.
A win-win situation for everyone.
