I need to replace a small external air vent that is 4.5" x 3". What's there at the moment is louvred pressed steel but too rusty to reuse. Can anyone point me in the right direction of something that looks vaguely traditional at this size?
In fact put "Cast Iron air brick cover" into Ebay and there's plenty, though not at that exact size. Could an oversize square or round one be an option, such as this?
Thanks for the replies. I actually took the vent to a metal workers and he's going to repair it for me so problem solved. It seems he's confident it can be reused so I'm pleased with that.
I know how you like pictures, so here's one of the delightful wall in which it used to reside. It's being repointed in a week or two and I have, since this picture was taken, raked out all the old cement. The small vent I was looking for is the red louvred one. I have to say the wall looks a while lot better now for having been cleaned out of all the rough pointing... and I've got rid of most of the cement covering the underfloor air brick too. And vegetation.
I vaguely remember that the small triangular ones are usually some kind of old anti-rising damp effort, inserting porous clay tubes to allow evaporation. But I could be mistaken!
They are indeed... the now-discredited Knappen system. When we repointed the front in lime, the builders carefully reset them in mortar in front of the clay tiles that are set in the wall. They don’t work, but I rather like the look of them... vaguely masonic. I’ll do that here too. I suspect the house has had them longer than it hasn’t; most likely date from the 1930s.
