Slippy Stones! *LINK*

Hi
Our new (but old) shop opens in a few weeks. The area in front is paved with lagre cobbles which get very slippy when wet. Does anyone know of a treatment I could use to reduce this and save me from injuring my customers before they get through the door?

The last time I was in Reeth there was too much snow and ice to get down to anything as firm as cobbles. I'd have thought that anyone able to negotiate their way round the village green will be able to get into your shop. Good luck.

Clogs are surely the answer?

Indeed, snow is often a problem but it looks very pretty. I guess I could sell clogs in the shop but people would still have to slide in to get them.
Could I try roughing up the stones in some way or is it just a case of cleaning to remove anything slippy.
I reckon some of you folks out there must have houses with flags/cobbles outside.

Cleaning will certainly help - the merest trace of moss can make a surface like a skating rink.
Failing that, would it be possible to put out some sort of (temporary) matting or duckboarding on wet days?

I guess it might be a bit like clearing snow and ice - if someone falls over and you haven't touched the snow and ice its their problem - if they fall over after you have cleared it you could be sued! Do the cobbles lie within your boundary?

Are they big round ankle breaking cobbles, small round cobbles or setts?
(I've only been through Reeth on my way to lead smelting sites... and then the last time was about 15 years ago.)

While you can buy nasty chemicals, or use a dilute solution of bleach, and a rather better environmentally friendly type of algae remover made from strong acetic acid, I gather that a flame gun will remove slippy moss and algae too..

It does come back, and so this isn't a one-off solution, but for a small area where quick results are required it may be worth the investment.
