Slate window sills

Hello,

I am replacing my UPVC windows for newly made wooden sash. I am keen to put in slate window sills but I can't seem to find what thickness would have been original. The house was built in the 1850's and is a Victorian semi-detached. My current concrete sills are 50mm thick, the sills in the rest of the street are varying thicknesses. Any advice welcomed, thank you

50mm is not very thick. In my mind victorian sills were much deeper. The sandstone ones on my house are 150mm at least. Where are you located?

Ours has quite square concrete ones on the upstairs windows...obviously replaced at some point in history. The downstairs are done with 2 layers of small tiles at an angle. So no uniformity in our house either. I'd say go with what you like and feel suits it best.

Hi, I am located in Ferryside, South Wales. There are a few properties with 50mm slate sills, nut my inlaws place has 80mm thick ones. Thank you for replying

I've been up against the same trouble recently replacing window sills that were either removed or not there in the first place. I had some sills to match so went for 2.5 inch stone cut flat with a slight fall to the outside. That's East of England though and my sills are in stone as we don'e have much slate around here. I haven't a clue what they did with slate. An internet search mostly tells us about how they mess things up these days, so best bet might be to find the neighbour's sill you like best and copy that! Chances are that's what the original builder would have done.
