slate nails - headlap?

Just looking at this useful diagram:

Presumably if i get reclaimed slates the headlap i can achieve will depend on where the nails are positioned?

Jim - that is a very poor drawing - the bottom slate isn't even nailed !! (good quality drawing - the information is incorrect, the basic priciples of slating are misunderstood)

Volume 1 fig. 71 will give you a good grounding. Only £10 or so.

I have all 4 vols. from the 1970s but my Vol 1 is 1982 as the first copy wore out !

Answers to previous posts :

Best Welsh slates are vastly superior to best Spanish ( Portugese,Canadian, Chilian etc.) but poor Welsh are inferior to best of the above.
Use ally nails, better and cheaper than copper. Don't use steel, even galv. will rust in a 100yrs or so.........

Sorry - missed your question..

If your (reclaimed) slates are of sufficient quality then you should be able to rehole them. Using a pick or press NOT a drill!!!

You will lose a few - more than if they were new, but that's life...

I've just come across this document:

chp 7 indicates appropriate headlap in relation to slate dimensions and pitch which looks really useful. So i should get away with 21 degree roof as long as the slate size and headlap are right.
