Slate Floor

I've exposed a slate floor and found that it is quite flakey in a number of areas. The flakes come away when the floor is cleaned, leaving a rougher stone. Is there any way I can smooth the newly exposed surface slightly (it is reasonably flat) so that it better blends in with the rest of the floor (which has been worn smooth over time).

Andrew - you will find that the rough parts do wear in time and start to blend.

Of course, you may want to do what they used to do in Yorkshire and lay sand on the floor and walk on it with clogs to clean and polish!

Though unfortunately, the worst parts are in the corners, so it looks like I'll have to dust my clogs down, as I don't suppose you would advocate using a coarse sanding disc on an angle grinder to sort out the problem (which was my first thought)....

Have a go in a small test area - it's messy though, we've been chopping bits off flagstones this afternoon with an angle grinder. Even with one person working the grinder and another with a vacuum cleaner immediately behind, a fair bit of dust was generated.

Dust mask, safety goggles, seal up doors etc.

or hire one of the wet cut machines - minimal dust.
