Skirting the issue!

Hi Folks,
Can anyone confirm what skirting this is?

I can't find similar profile anywhere and need to find some to cut in. Also anyone got any ideas how I can merge Torus with the older style as on this landing?

I call that a flush bead, but could be wrong.

My skirting is similar, well the original 1830s stuff is anyway:

I got the local timber yard to run some lengths off for me to match an off-cut, and they did a good job.

The torus-to-bead join is tricky. Not sure how you'd get a join, but you could insert a plain block between the two different profiles to act as a stop. But that's not really an improvement, come to think of it.

What happened there - a previous owner's alteration?

If it's not a direct match - ie a butt up job - you can use sash window bead on top of plain wood to replicate the first lot of stuff.

Have also done similar with ogee architrave to match a later 1800s ogee skirting - joined up OK too.

Thanks for suggestions. I have found meself nice friendly timber yard this am who are machining me some window sills so I'll be taking some 'flush bead' skirting for them to 'copy' later this week.

Sadly Ian not previous owners alterations but a faux pas on my behalf. Top floor of the house has been virtually stripped back to rafters and the rotten skirting removed was very poor standard bull nose that I replaced with Torus and only when I got out to landing realised what terrible sin I had committed.

Are you redoing all the skirting with the new bead moulding?

Not a major sin - considering the limited range of modern standard mouldings. Plenty of torus, but no simple beading. Bah!

I've not managed to find any exact matches for architrave or skirting off the shelf anywhere. The closest was an ogee architrave that could be adapted to make up a planted skirting.

The modern ogee architrave has a flat bevel, but the original ones I've got have a rounded edge.

I keep promising that I'll hunt down some old moulding planes for making my own lengths of skirting etc, rather than paying a lot for the timber merchant to do it. But, I've got to admit that they do a good job with their fancy modern machines!
